Obituary for Dharam Bir Sawhney

April 3rd 1933 – September 18, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Dharam Bir Sawhney on September 18, 2021.

He was married to Savitri Sawhney for 59 years and was a beloved father to Sunanda Sachdev (Manoj) and Vivek Sawhney (Shalini). His grandchildren – Aniruddh, Arushi, Arnav, and Pranav – were a source of immense pride and joy to him. He is predeceased by his two brothers and two sisters. Dharam Bir had many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will deeply miss his sense of humor, and zest for life.

Bir as he was fondly called was born in Kufri, Undivided India on 3rd April 1933. After partition the family
shifted to Jagadhari. He did his schooling from Mukundlal Public School and his graduation from S.A. Jain
College, Ambala City. He then went on to do his Apprenticeship from the Railways in Jamalpur, Bihar. After
his training he was posted at Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi. He was handpicked to go to the US on a 6
months training in 1963 at General Electric. After the training he was part of the core team to setup the Diesel
Locomotive at Varanasi. He retired from the Railways as Deputy Chief Vigilance Officer in April 1991 and
made Noida his abode. Subsequently, settling down in Waterloo, Canada.

Dharam Bir was a doting father and caring husband who sacrificed his own comforts to help others. There were
many qualities that distinguished him from other mortals – he led a very disciplined life that helped him stay
healthy and fit except for the last few years of his life. Even in his last few years when a debilitating disease was
ravaging his body, he was mentally sharp as ever with no loss of sense of humor. He was passionate about India
music, films and sports. He has very few weaknesses and key amongst them are the India food, particularly
anything sweet. It is no wonder he lovingly called his daughter Sweety.

Condolences for the family and in lieu of flowers, Savitri invites you to donate to a charity of your choice.
