Obituary for Emma Kate MacKinnon (MacKinnon)

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Emma Kate MacKinnon at the young age of 52. A life gone too soon as a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, companion, friend and neighbour.

Kate, as we called her, was born March 15, 1969 in Midland, Ontario and she died Wednesday March 17, 2021 in London, Ontario. Survived by her two sons Jesse (Emily) and Jordan MacKinnon, her mother Dianne Bates, sisters Dawn MacKinnon (Michael Maloney), Alexandra Bates and Cheryl Holmes (Randy) and her companion Albert (Hap) Guay; predeceased by father Barry MacKinnon and stepmother Suzanne.

Emma Kate had a great love of plants and all animals, but especially horses and dogs. In her teens, her passion for horses resulted in great success as a championship rider at the CNE and the Royal Winter Fair, winning many trophies and ribbons in all pleasure class riding. This became a career that had her exercising thoroughbred race horses and managing private stables for prominent thoroughbred horse owners. Kate became a professional landscaping business owner, creating design plans and planting gardens in Toronto and area. Kate loved her two boys, whom she raised in York Region; she was proud of their accomplishments as professional tradespeople. Kate always loved a good jam session with musical friends and family.

She loved travel to the Caribbean and Florida. Kate enjoyed the outdoors, especially on a warm summer's day puttering in her garden, and she kept a lovely home in London for the last 10-plus years. Kate was involved with the Epilepsy Society in London and enjoyed being a member of the neighbourhood YMCA. She was a great hostess and cook who enjoyed food from all over the world. Kate always loved a good find rooting around second hand shops. She was a smart, funny girl and she will be missed.
