Obituary

SCHAFER, Grant "William"

It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Grant William Schafer announces his passing on September 16, 2019 at the age of 69 at St. Mary's Hospital in Kitchener, surrounded by the love of his family.

He will be forever missed by his daughters, Nataliya and Alixandriya Schafer; their mother, Janet Schafer (née Currie); his mother, Marta Schafer (née Janzen); and his grand-dog, Bo. Predeceased by his brother, Glen (2018), and father, Stanley (1999).

Grant was called to the bar in 1978 after graduating from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Bachelor of Laws degree and Waterloo Lutheran University with an Honours BA in Sociology & Philosophy in 1973. He practiced criminal, family, and child protection law for 40 years in Kitchener and was a well-respected attorney. Grant had a great love for music and literature, a passion for what he did, and a fantastic sense of humour.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation to be held from 3 - 4 p.m. on October 17, 2019 at the Waterloo Region Courthouse at 85 Frederick St, Kitchener. Memorial and eulogies to follow.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Mary's Cardiac Care Centre would be appreciated. In the spirit of Grant's good humour and his tendency to never throw things away, attendees are asked to wear the oldest necktie or piece of jewelry that they own.

I knew Grant as a teenager as I worked with his mother Marta and his father Stan at Dominion Life. It is with much sadness that I send condolences to his immediate family and particularly his mother Marta, who was a profound influence in my career. Roy McAllister, Kelown, BC

Grant, Glen, my late brother Paul and I had many happy days playing together, particularly at 11 Dietz in the playhouse. Grant and I were in 8th Waterloo Cubs together and attended Camp Everton in July 1959 with Akela Eddie Otterbein. The photo shows us all decked out in our uniforms with earthly belongings next to the 1956 Ford. Our parents thought it would be a good idea if we learned some German so Grant and I gave it a whirl for a while at WLU on Saturday mornings. It didn't last long or sink in. I'm glad Grant and Glen enjoyed happy lives. Although it's been many years since I've seen the Schafer boys, my condolences are just as sincere now as ever. May your family find peace in knowing that Grant is still defending people but in a much better place.

Grant and I were friends and next door neighbours as pre-schoolers and in primary school. His kindness then, as an older friend, is reflected in memories of him expressed by his extended family. It is a shock to lose a childhood contemporary so young.
