Obituary for Savitri Sawhney (Bhasin)

October 19, 1937 – August 18, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Savitri Sawhney on August 18, 2021. She was married to Dharam Bir Sawhney for 59 years and was a beloved mother to Sunanda Sachdev (Manoj) and Vivek Sawhney (Shalini). Her grandchildren – Aniruddh, Arushi, Arnav, and Pranav – were a source of immense pride and joy to her. She is survived by her sister, Santosh Sawhney, and predeceased by her brother Satinder Bhasin and sister Sheila Sabharwal. Savitri had many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will deeply miss her infectious smile and warm personality.

Savitri was born in Karol Bagh, Delhi, India on October 19, 1937. She graduated from the Satbhrawan Arya Girls Senior Secondary School in 1954 and then went on to receive her Health Visitor Training at The Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Amritsar, Punjab. She supervised a health centre in Badli, Haryana before getting married in 1963. After marriage, she settled down in Banaras for 28 years. Thereafter, she moved to Noida and finally settled in Waterloo.

Savitri lived her life to the fullest. She was always concerned about the well-being of her children, grandchildren, and the people around her. Her passions included reading, writing poetry, knitting, and connecting with friends and family. She enjoyed going to East Indian Ladies Club, Club 55, and the Seniors Day Program. She kept herself busy by being active on Facebook and made sure to wish people on their birthdays and anniversaries – often signing off as “Savitri Sawhney from Canada.” Her absence will be deeply missed. She enjoyed many small pleasures in life and always had room for an extra serving of ice cream.

Condolences for the family and in lieu of flowers, Savitri invites you to donate to a charity of your choice.
